When President Obama rolls out, he does so in style. The president of the United States is typically spotted traveling in his custom-made Cadillac limousine surrounded by 22 other vehicles. The president’s convoy may be a bit over the top, but it’s necessary in ensuring the safety for one of the most powerful leaders in the world. In lieu of the National Election taking place in just 2 and half months, let’s explore a few other presidential limousines that have caught our eye in the past.
1972 Lincoln Continental
It took 3 years for the Ford Motor Company to build this vehicle. It was responsible for protecting both Presidents Ford and Reagan from assassins’ bullets. This would be the last presidential car equipped with roof openings through which the president could stand.
1983 Cadillac Fleetwood
After decades of Lincolns, named after President Lincoln – of course, Cadillac was given the chance to design a limousine for the president of the United States. The cars were stretched only 17inches and their roofs raised 3 inches. The Fleetwood was said to have been awkward in appearance but gave President Reagan full visibility to look out as he drove past his fellow citizens.
2001 Cadillac Deville
As security threats became higher, the secret service’s safety requirements for the presidential vehicle became stricter. The Cadillac Deville contained 5-inch thick armored and bulletproof glass that also blocked most of the light spectrum. President Bush felt safe knowing that any harm, even the sun, wasn’t able to penetrate his vehicle.
Calling President Obama’s car armored would be an understatement. It is said to be 8 inches thick and its doors alone weigh as much as the doors on a Boeing 757 aircraft. The tires are Kevlar-reinforced ensuring that the Beast can be kept on the road for as long as necessary. The frame of the Beast is that of a Cadillac; however, it is heavily based on the Chevrolet Kodiak, a commercial vehicle used typically as a dump truck.
Wait and See!
Recently, the newest Presidential vehicle was spotted being test driven by the Secret Service. General Motors will not confirm the information to Fox News, but the image that appears online could very well be another form of Cadillac. This is speculation, of course, but the Presidential Cadillac tradition has been going strong since 1983.
