Victory in the Battle at Puebla
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexico’s Independence. It is instead, a celebration of Mexico’s victory in the battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. The Mexican militia was highly outnumbered by the French, and the victory was highly unlikely.
Abraham Lincoln Wasn’t a Huge Help
The president at the time of the Franco-Mexican war, Abraham Lincoln, sympathized with the Mexican people but was unable to lend direct support due to the ongoing U.S. Civil War.
Made Popular by Roosevelt
Franklin Roosevelt enacted the “Good Neighbor Policy” in 1933 in order to improve relations with Latin American countries. As a result, Cinco de Mayo became a popular holiday in the U.S.
Margarita means “Daisy” in Spanish
Many people claim to be the inventor of the Margarita, but the earliest stories dates by to 1937 in a restaurant called Rancho La Gloria. The restaurant’s owner, Carlos Herrera is said to have created a recipe with the same ingredients as the classic margarita.

According to a recent study, the United States consumes twice as much Tequila as Mexico. Even though the spirit originated in Mexico, profit sales continue to increase in North America.
