It’s easy to appreciate the comfort, style, and utility a limousine service provides. It allows you the ability to travel in luxury and the freedom to drink, forget about parking, and focus on the good times all with the security that your ability to travel has been taken care of. But where did this form of transportation find its start? What is the history of the limousine?
The history of the limousine began long before the advent of automobiles. The term was used as early as the 1720’s to refer to any kind of chauffeured vehicle with a partition between the driver and the occupants. The term “limousine” itself was coined as a reference to a kind of traveling hood worn by the inhabitants of the Limousin region of France. The similarity between the hood and the partition used in the vehicles was so striking that the vehicle and the area became synonymous.
After the age of sedan chairs and horse-drawn carriages had passed, the first stretch limousine was built in 1928 in Fort Smith, Arkansas by the Armbruster Coach Company. The cars were created to transport popular big band jazz musicians and their orchestras. Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and many other jazz stars used the vehicles to move their bands and instruments across the country, which prompted many to dub the vehicles “Big Band Buses”.
By the mid 1930s a limousine service had become a must-have for any serious Hollywood star, serving the dual purpose of taking them on and off set in style, and also transporting filming equipment and crews when necessary. It around this time in the history of the limousine that the vehicle began to see use in airports as well. It was not uncommon to hire a limousine service to pick up guests and impress them with a tour of the city.
In 1974 the first six-door funeral limousines began to be manufactured using Cadillac chassis. During the late 60’s and early 70’s limousine services saw increasing use from politicians, movie stars, and visiting dignitaries, prompting the manufacture and market of available limousines to increase dramatically.
