Gear up to place your bets, and read on to discover everything you need to know about this year’s event.
A History of the Preakness
The first Preakness race was held on may 27, 1873, and named after a winning colt from Preakness, New Jersey. John Chamberlain’s three-year-old racehorse, Survivor, collected the $2,050 winning purse, winning the race by 10 lengths. This would continue to be the largest margin of victory until 2004 when Smarty Jones won by 11.5 lengths.
